The Great Big Scottish QOTW Off-Topic Bash

To eat cake, drink booze and look up people's kilts, apparently...

edit: bring mirrored shoes

even more important edit: If you're a BOY, you must wear a KILT!

Edit Feb 09 - Thanks to Davros Grandad, we now have a venue (see below). The Mr Nice Manager Man said he would reserve the wee back room for us but this only accommodates about 15 people, but he also said we were welcome to spill out into the main bar area.

See you there!

(, Tue 17 Jun 2008, 14:03, Reply)
Kilt looking-up

should only be done with mirrored shoes though.

(, Tue 17 Jun 2008, 14:07, Reply)
I dunno about that

the ladies I've come across on a night out certainly aren't that subtle..

(, Wed 10 Sep 2008, 15:22, Reply)

It's so far away!

I hope I don't forget.

* Provisionally signs up *

It's far enough in the future that I don't have anything planned, but I'll be buggered if I know where I'll be coming from then.

I'm UP for that ;o)

There's a slight possibility of DG & meself getting hitched that weekend. Would a quickie at Gretna Green followed by beer with you guys be inappropriate/ostentatious?

On that day

It's a little far in advance for me to be able to plan with any certainty,

but I think in the name of responsible planet-saving we should probably arrange to pool travelling resources, i.e. it might be worth getting a minibus and swooping up people from motorway services on the M1...

(, Tue 26 Aug 2008, 15:39, Reply)
Haven't been to Edinburgh for years

Hope to come, but rubbish at forward planning.
Do I need my passport?

Easter

From the chat on today's home thread, it's apparent that some people are not aware that this bash is on the Easter weekend, which means that travel and accommodation will be more problematic than usual!

Get booking!

Watch Edinburgh

it's a bit of a nightmare for needing to book two nights at a weekend. a lot of places won't take bookings for a single night.

(, Wed 29 Oct 2008, 11:44, Reply)
If enough people are interested

and can get themselves to Warwick/Leamington, I'll be driving from there up to Edinburgh.

Gaz me if you're interested.

I'm considering wearing mine

but it's a light tartan and I'm fucking terrified of getting stuff on it. I need a sporting kilt.

(, Wed 29 Oct 2008, 11:41, Reply)
What's a sporting kilt?

(, Tue 3 Mar 2009, 12:32, Reply)
Shorter.

(in construction material length not actual length, usually 5 yards not 8 yards) and usually made of slightly inferior quality material, so it doesn't cost so much. You wear it to the rugby and for drinking purposes, in case you get it dirty, then you don't fuck up your £400 handmade job.

(, Tue 3 Mar 2009, 16:31, Reply)
Holy fuckoly!

You're all bloody going!

If I can get up there (might try hitching!) and find somewhere to stay, I might join you.

Did someone mention a hostel? And a six-person threshold? Is anyone else doing this on the cheap? Cos this sounds like the option to me!

Either that or kipping in someone's bath :)

If there's still room in my b3ta wagon, we'll most likely be driving up the M6 to get there, passing not far from you. You'd be welcome to join the fun.

(, Wed 29 Oct 2008, 15:17, Reply)
Ooh

Now it's much nearer the time, have you guys all made arrangements yet? Is there space? And when are you travelling?

I'm an awkward bugger though... dunno how much time off work I can get, or if indeed my presence will be required here/in Ireland as my Fella is very inconsiderately moving over there round about that time.

But if it can at all in any way shape or form be done, then I am coming to fucking Edinburgh. I have to. I made a promise that was shook on and everything.

(, Sun 1 Mar 2009, 21:16, Reply)
Good Lord!

I looked at this, considered it, then decided against it.

Then when I heard we may also be celebrating a wedding, I couldn't say no!

Looks like it'll be national express for me!

I've never been to Scotland.

Now I'll be coming twice in a month. For, at the start of May, I'll be starting a hitch-hike around the whole coast of the UK for charity.

Hitch-hiking from Buckinghamshire to Edinburgh sounds like great practice, so count me in.

I'm not wearing a kilt, though :)

Looks like it's going to be

booking an entire somewhere rather than wandering from pub to pub.

Don't forget to allow for a few more people signing up before April.

(, Sun 8 Feb 2009, 10:50, Reply)
And a few dropping out.

(, Sun 22 Feb 2009, 21:25, Reply)
Perhaps

we should move the start-time back to mid-day like what we did with the big summer-bash last year.

Also, bear in mind that many people often drop out at the last minute.

(, Mon 23 Feb 2009, 23:04, Reply)
Possible venue suggestion

www.jdwetherspoon.co.uk/pubs/pub-details.php?PubNumber=371

It's big, and central - just behind Princes Street. Lots of rooms and hidey holes. And would probably satisfy everyone's tastes drinks wise.
(, Mon 16 Feb 2009, 15:12, Reply)
If that link is to the standing order

really, don't. It's totally and utterly souless. I know somewhere big is required but that place is just properly wrong. and it'll be full of skulldestroyignly drunk arsey Neds on a saturday.

I suggested the Secret Arcade to happylittletulip but I'm not sure if you can book the whole place at the weekend.

(, Tue 17 Feb 2009, 9:34, Reply)
And it is getting worse....

Was in a few bars along George Street on Friday night, decided to go in the Standing Order for a pint as we hadn't been there for a while. Walked in took one look then left. It is murder.

(, Tue 17 Feb 2009, 11:10, Reply)
Fair enough

I would have suggested Whistle Binkys but you can't really have a conversation in there.

Ah well. Am in Edinburgh Thursday & Friday; maybe inspiration will strike.

My ace Geordie friend Frank just said:

'My Scottish mate Dominic keeps telling me how well he knows Edinburgh nightlife – time to put him to the test (he came up trumps for me in Glasgow). Another colleague lived there for years and has given me many a good tip – I’ll feed the info through as and when I get it.'

I'll add anything I get to here and maybe we can find something. It would a shame if we can't find somewhere for us all to be together; defeats the object a bit!

/London interference

Interfere away Clenders

I have a few regular haunts when I go to Edinburgh, but they're either too small, or too loud.

(, Tue 17 Feb 2009, 17:11, Reply)
This is a problem, yep

Everywhere will be busy, it's a Saturday. A place you can reserve an area of would be the way forward, but I can't think of anywhere that would happily reserve an area for 50+ people on a saturday night without a deposit or payment.

Was in 99 George Hanover* St last night, which is a lovely bar, but I'm guessing it would be packed on a Saturday.

*teach me to trust my drunken memory.

To find the Guildford Arms, you need to be at the Waverly Station end of Princes Street. Look for a Burger King* situated on the corner of a block of shops - the pub is on the corner of the street immediately behind it.

You don't have to know anyone.

In fact, it might be more appealing because you don't :)

i don't have a kilt either :/

I very much doubt anyone will turn up in a kilt anyway.

Too nervous of straying B3ta ladies hands : )

I'm going to have to pull out (ooh, matron!)

I completely forgot about my Mum's birthday being on the 10th April, so I'll be at her birthday dinner. Maybe next time...

Question is

Can I get away with not wearing ridiculous long socks, and just wear trainer socks?

I hate socks.

(, Mon 6 Apr 2009, 10:57, Reply)
You hate socks?

That's quite an odd thing to hate :\

(, Mon 6 Apr 2009, 11:15, Reply)
It is.

But it's one of the many things I hate.

Maybe hate's too strong, I much prefer being barefoot though.

Fair enough...

I won't judge, what with my sand-phobia...

Shit, what a couple of freaks.

Labs, if you hate socks, what does it matter? Size isn't always important, you know.*

Freak and proud. Kinda.

I tried on my kilt the other night.

Reeeeeeally obvious bulge which shall have to be hidden with the sporran.

(, Mon 6 Apr 2009, 11:50, Reply)
Wait...

that's not where you're supposed to put your socks...

(, Mon 6 Apr 2009, 14:20, Reply)
I hope you all have a rubbish time without me.

I bet you won't though. You bunch of internet fun time people.

(, Mon 6 Apr 2009, 23:41, Reply)
I'll be thinking of you!

Does that count? I may be thinking of you and have to excuse myself though ;)

(, Tue 7 Apr 2009, 15:13, Reply)
Oh Lusty!

I haven't even met you and I wish you were coming : )

(, Tue 7 Apr 2009, 19:19, Reply)
I think there should be a cardboard cut out of me.

So it'll sort of feel like I'm there.

Actually, on second thought maybe that's not the best idea. I have a feeling certain people would take advantage and put the cut out in rather compromising positions.

TGB, your sig is very sweet. If I was there right now I'd give your face a good rubbing.

My flatmates gone away

So if anyone needs some space I got a double matress and an incredibly comfy sofa up for grabs. Flats a bit of a mess but if someone is going to stay then I wou;d have to do some tidying!!

Gaz me for mobile number to discuss.
