I just think he picked a bad example
by saying "the odd bottle of water and stray pair of trainers" he's willfully glossing over situation that was far, far worse. As Fray said up there, people died in those riots, homes were destroyed and a lot of innocent people suffered. Whether you agree with his politics or not, it's just wrong of him to write that.
If someone said that the Hillsborough disaster was "just a bit of argy bargy" then they'd be ripped to shreds.

Except he HAS said that.
He flat out stated at the time that it "Would be wrong to stifle their (the looters') individuality, and their creative approach to venting their frustrations by jailing them."
That was Brand, about a week after the riots.
