Yup, Carpenter was really on top of it from the late '70s until the early '90s.
Then he seemed to shit it all out the window. The Ward was such a disappointment as it was supposed to be a return to form.
The Thing, They Live, Escape From New York, Halloween, all absolute corkers. Prince of Darkness though is the only one that puts me on edge.

I did.
Even though I really like some of Mann's stuff (Brian Cox is the best Lector by far in my humble), I didn't get along with that. I'd read the book a few months before and I think that spoiled it for me. I'd created an exact picture of what it would look like and the differences disappointed me.
Having said that, it was a ropey VHS copy and 20 years ago, must be time for a rewatch.
