In saying that ... I believe it is nigh on impossible to set petrol alight by simply smoking near it. Or having your phone go off. Total(ish) Myths.

but the fumes are extremely dangerous. it's why you'll see the ventilation pipes from the underground tanks open pretty high up.

They don't want people being distracted near the pumps for safety reasons and that's what they came up with.

The risk with a ciggie exists but is really pretty low - You can't do any of the hollywood bollocks of throwing a fag end onto a trail of petrol to light it. You can in very specific circumstances get a fag to light petrol vapour but even that's pretty hard to do.

With smoking near petrol though? Why take the risk?

I think we can say conclusively that using a mobile phone on a petrol station forecourt does not set your crotch on fire.
