Wonderfully bleak. The music kinda reminds me of Donnie Darko ... off to check sources.

Foolish me - I was thinking of Gary Jules' cover of 'Mad World' from Donnie Darko. Ugh, bedwetter music.
I just checked Yann Tiersen, noticed he did the score for 'Good Bye, Lenin!' which is a fab film.

The original song was featured on the soundtrack for the film "Amélie".
I enjoy the film, but I can see why some people say it's a little twee. The soundtrack is very good either way* and that particular tune is "Comptine d'un Autre Ete - l'Apres-Midi". My own favourite is "La Noyee"
My only complaint about the soundtrack is that it didn't include the catchy tune that the erotic dancer performs to. (Alex Gopher - "The Child")
*Just so long as you like bouncy accordion music.
