If it's any help: I've got a friend who's a fairly sucessful illustrator (well, it's entirely paid his way for the last 20 years)
I reckon schmoozing is desperately important: making contacts by attending every private view, event, fair &c. going.
Sadly, reckon living in that there london helps too.
