I think that nomadic tribes in North Africa had used mould to cure things for centuries...

Well yes,
In the sense that people have been boiling willow bark for millennia, but western* medicine came along and worked out what was in the bark that actually worked, and lo and behold: aspirin.
*probably not western as I expect the arabs did a lot of it, but 'modern' medicine.
