Clfford Brown
I love this. It's a shame he died in a car wreck at 25 years old. As a trumpet player, I nearly cry every time I hear this.
Alright, enough of my sobbing bullshit!

I don't play so much now
Concentrate on the guitar and my band mostly. Brass bands mean contesting and playing fetes all summer, and orchestras mean bar counting and transposition.
Should do a little practise though, now I cone to think of it.

Sounds like me.
I used to be lead in college big bands. Now it's just working a little bit every day with a new embochure concept.
Pretty much all of my friends are pros now. One was lead with Mayard Furgeson's band. Another is playing tenor with Tower of Power. I can't imagine doing that for a living. But the tenor seems to be in heaven.

I guess you just have to pursue what you enjoy
I'm grade 8 but never good enough to play at that sort of standard. To be honest brass is generally not a type of music I enjoy listening to. I like chillout, metal and some dub I guess. Saw Gentleman's Dub Club recently who were great. Work and general malaise means I just can't really be arsed with it now.

Yeah, I've wanted to play guitar for ages. It's on my list of things. Monotonic instruments are not very interesting in general.
It didn't take me long before discovering punk and indie, and just wallowing in it. It seems old now, but Sonic Youth, My Bloody Valentine. No trumpets there. I've recently gone back to listening to jazz, and for some reason I'm finding it really enjoyable. Not most of it, but Miles, Coltrane, Bill Evans. Nothing like heroin induced music.

That's why I love death metal
It's like jazz, but to the nth degree - harder, faster, heavier, and more extreme. Try listening to something like Spawn Of Possession and try to analyse it musically, it's insane.
As for heroin induced music, Alice In Chains and Nirvana.

Cool. Let's not forget Spacemen 3
Wait a minute. Does grade 8 mean you're like 16 years old? Or is that in reference to the band Grade 8?

By no means a virtuoso though.

I'm beginning to become utterly confused
Don't worry, it's not difficult.
Are you American? I didn't go to grade school, I'm 30. Grades are what you measure music in. I've got grade 8, which means I can play lots of black notes.
And in my spare time I like psychedelics. And drinking. Like now. So, sorry if I'm talking shit.

No worries, daddy-o
Technical death metal. It's the next level of jazz, if you can get over the initial wtf, it's very rewarding.

You have like a black belt in trumpet?
That's so cool.
Recommend me some Spawn Of Possession, I'm not familiar.
I very much enjoy Demilich though.

Never heard of them. It sounds frighteningly difficult now. But I did really well in that stuff once upon a time.
No more school for me!

Nice piece
Not much alike, but you might like The Cinematic Orchestra if you've not heard them. Another great band to see live: youtu.be/fA8P2MSqNmw
