I guess it depends on how you read that statement.
I don't think he's saying that 3D conversion should be used on classic films, but that the only valid excuse to use it at all is on an older films that weren't shot in 3D to begin with. It generally looks awful and so if you intend to release a film in 3D, then shoot it in 3D in the first place (which can look very good if done well - Avatar or Coraline, for example).

is surely in tune with his statement; i.e. if you're making a film and release it in 3D film it in 3D in the first place, don't add the effect post-production.
