As I don't understand any russian*
I went off searching for the absolutely brilliant BBC "Jackanory 3000" adaptation. It's nowhere to be found! Apparently, according to the Wikipedia, the "Tolkien Estate" has repeatedly blocked the BBC from issuing a DVD of it. Bastards.
*apart from "vodka"

Yeah
I'll actually have to read the book now. By myself. With my eyes and brain.
And their website is crap, with an update promised "soon" in "2009".

I recommend David Day's Guide to Tolkien.
Goes into all the lore and things, but unlike the original novels is very, very readable.

Cheers for the heads up
I was looking into taking my son to the pictures to watch the new one tonight, but's it would cost over £25 - and I don't even want to watch it in 3-bloody-D!
I'm off to the book shop!
*I could get 6 launches for that much and still have change for a beer in the clubhouse after!

I thought it was fun, but I still hate 3D
Might go see it again in 2D if I get the chance.
Oh and there's a gliding club near where I'm moving to in January, hoping to get a course going :D

Saw it last night
I was so bored I nearly fell asleep in the goblin kingdom bit.

tell me about it
the whole thing felt like a very long collection of deleted scenes from the LOTR films. The only good bit was Gollum, and that made up about 10 minutes of the running time.

I heard Peter Jackson basically say
he was filming all the footnotes from the other books and shoehorning them into this one.
Sounds brilliant!
He really needs to go to editing school.

He has to in other to squeeze 3 feature length films out of a relatively short story
and you just know he's eyeing up The Similarion...

I rather hope he does the Silmarillion
There's a lot of epic stories, places and characters, but the book looks horrific as a read. We've been watching the LOTR films at home in the last few days, and I'd forgotten how much I love them.
Hobbit feels a bit childish, but I'd love to see them do the rise and fall of Numenor and the treachery of Morgoth on film.
