I just liked the gag, the great timing and bravery
if Piers says nothing there's no gag, and if he's self deprecating it wouldn't work half as well.
to work it gambles on Piers saying something in agreement to what he thinks is a complement, it's humphries banking on piers's puffed-up ego

Bravery?
I mean, I get that there’s a risk that jokes won’t work, but all Barry did was to deliver a non verbal put down to a notoriously self regarding twat in front of an audience that had come to see a show he was hosting. The crowd was guaranteed to be on side. Moron is extremely bumptious and loves the sound of his own voice more than his own children. If anyone pauses for breath the odds of him not saying something are very fucking slim. As gambles go, the stakes were subterranean. Sure, it was perfectly timed and delivered by seasoned pro in character, but that’s bravery? Do me a favour. RIP Humphries though, he was class.
