This is a question Redundant technology

Music on vinyl records, mobile phones the size of house bricks and pornography printed on paper. What hideously out of date stuff do you still use?

Thanks to boozehound for the suggestion

I consider
any grown man who wears a battery powerd wrist watch a complete rotter, probably a shyster and undoubtedly a fool. Particularly those who spend a grand on a “prestige” brand, and end up with a £10 quartz movement on thier wrist.

There's something about springs and cogs that makes things correct.

I know someone who bought a "bargain" Rolex for a ridiculous sum of money (but still less than a real Rolex would have cost), and was most aggrieved when I pointed out that a Rolex's second hand is supposed to sweep gracefully around the dial, not jerk slightly every second as if powered by a cheap quartz movement. Apparently I wasn't supposed to notice.

Actually, I think the owners of prestige mechanical watches are generally twats
Their watches are not as accurate as my relatively inexpensive quartz watch, especially if I splash out on one that has the radio link to the NPL. If I get a watch with a solar panel it will never need a battery, nor regular winding.

As there are fewer mechanical parts in my watch, it will never need servicing and if my modern watch goes faulty or gets lost or stolen, replacing it several times over will still cost less than one oversized TAG/Rolex/Omega/Oris/Brietling.

I'll also not look quite so much like a twat.

you're right,
spend a grand on any of those brands and you'll get shit, but theres loads of good stuff out their if you look further than the local chain store.

Having left my "good" watch at home
and then driven 500km I dropped into a shop in Coonabarabran and bought a $95 stainless steel electronic, available from chain stores throughout Australia. It's timekeeping is as good as anything I have ever owned, better than the digital one I bought in the 70s. It has day and date and the luminous hands are still visible after five hours in the dark. The black dial is easy to read by day and it is supposed to be waterproof to 100 metres.

I have two "better" watches from famous makers but one is pretty but useless in the dark (settle down at the back) and the other is difficult to read at any time. It also runs through batteries at an alarming rate. It is supposed to feature an alarm, but with the best will in the word and the instructions I have never been able to make the damn thing work.

What's the point of a watch at all?
The time is everywhere now, you don't need it on your wrist.
