This is a question Bodge Jobs

If you can't fix it with a hammer and a roll of duck tape, it's not worth fixing at all, my old mate said minutes before that nasty business with the hammer and a roll of duck tape. Tell us of McGyver-like repairs and whether they were a brilliant success or a health and safety nightmare.

Cold water tank goes in the loft.
Hot water cylinder goes in the airing cupboard.

However, a stuck thermostat makes hot water flow up the vent pipe into the cold water tank in the loft, cold water then cycles round and round through hot cylinder getting hotter and hotter for about 3 days until the plastic tank in the loft goes all floppy from the heat and discharges 20 gallons of boiling water through your ceiling. People sleeping underneath malfunctioning cold tanks have died because of this.

Euro regs now demand all hot water cylinders are fitted with two thermostats precisely for this reason. Most people will hear the bubbling of boiling water for a day or so beforehand, also the hot water coming out of the taps will be VERY hot, much more than usual.

Combi boiler. Job done, no storage tanks needed.
Handy hint: Save up the extra £200 and buy a really good one, such as Worchester. You'll make the money back in 6-12 months on lower gas bills.
