It wasn't until the b3ta mods read the Flashman novels that we changed from mild-mannered computer operators into heavily-whiskered copulators, poltroons and all round bastards in a well-known cavalry regiment.

The Salmon of Doubt by Douglas AdamsI bought this thinking I'd get his unfinished Dirk Gently novel, but what I actually got totally blew my mind. After his untimely death, a bunch of Douglas's friends got together and raided his Mac for unfinished writings, musings, columns, articles and anything else he might have stored in there. Edited together, they were released as the Salmon of Doubt, and if it has a theme it's his wonder at the world we live in, coupled with his emphatic atheism. Reading it was (as my girlfriend said at the time) like sitting down and having a long chat with a really good friend, and even Richard Dawkins acknowledges the huge blow struck to the atheist movement when we lost Douglas.
