My own mother refused to let me use the word 'oblong' instead of 'rectangle'. Which is just odd, to be honest.

Althoughyou have to make sure they're not saying 'would've', which can sound quite similar and is grammatically hunky dory...
If they're using 'of' rather than the contraction, prod them in the eye with the nearest stick.
