This is a question Common

Freddy Woo writes, "My wife thinks calling the front room a lounge is common. Worse, a friend of hers recently admonished her daughter for calling a toilet, a toilet. Lavatory darling. It's lavatory."

My own mother refused to let me use the word 'oblong' instead of 'rectangle'. Which is just odd, to be honest.

What stuff do you think is common?

Signs in supermarkets that say
'10 items or fewer' ARRRGH it should be 'Up to 10 items'

I thought "Up to 10 items" was fine
The problem was with signs that said "10 items or less"

You seem to have edited incorrectly
and complained about one correct form in favour of another.

You are a silly person.

And have lived up to your username.

Twice.

are you
my dad?!
(, Thu 16 Oct 2008, 17:41, closed)
Why?
Ten items or fewer is fine.
(, Thu 16 Oct 2008, 17:45, closed)
10 items or fewer is ok. 10 items or less is incorrect.
You shouldn't use the word 'less' when describing discrete items.

I.e. you have less money when you have fewer pennies.

Shouldn't it be
Up to and including 10 items?
(, Sat 18 Oct 2008, 15:30, closed)
It should say
'A few random bits'n'bobs'

Nicer, no?
