My own mother refused to let me use the word 'oblong' instead of 'rectangle'. Which is just odd, to be honest.

Thank you.Actually, I suspect that my attitudes in these matters are really not that unusual- it's just that expressing them tends to be a bit risky, as you invariably end up with someone accusing you of being a racist or an elitist.
In a semi-anonymous website I can thrash this out with few repercussions. Were I to have had this conversation with a co-worker, most likely I'd be escorted from the premises immediately. Sad, really...
