I agree with vertigo...it is possible. My parents bought a place in France to renovate. In the times before we had kitchen/bedroom/bathroom we had a caravan with a chemical toilet. We would dig a latrine at the bottom of the field and empty the waste into it before covering it over again. One summer at one of the latrine sites there was a crop of tomato plants. My father still thinks they were some of the best tomatoes he has ever tasted.
