who owned an extensively modified Delorean.

Hmm
Maybe one of the dogs was the leader of a future canine resistance movement and had been fathered by the future adult version of one of the puppies which had been sent back from the future. And the "coving" was what was left of the cyberdog sent from the future to assassinate... oh, I can't be arsed.
