been there a few times before.
I hate it when this happens. You're out and the bill comes, you decide to split the bill equally, it doesn't matter if you didnt have as many drinks as blah or only had pasta, blah, but the cardinal sin is using other people's tips to pay for your own meal, and then you all have to scuttle out ashamed as the waitress realises she has bust her balls for an hour or so. for. nothing.

Exactly
He doesn't drink, so long before the bill came he was saying "How many drinks have you had etc..." in an effort to pay less than the rest of us (which is quite fair) as he only had Diet Cokes all night.

However, usually, as you say, we'll split the bill equally - sometimes it's still short despite all of us paying over what we had, it's then that we realise, yet again that he's not put in, or only put a 5th of what he should put in, and he's already left as he's "got to help my mum with someting" or an equally weak excuse.

People that drink soft drinks in restaurants
spend just as much as people who drink alcoholic drinks due to the obscene mark ups on soft drinks. So that's not an argument.

Not entirely true.
A pint costs around 3.20-3.50 where we are.

A Diet Coke is exactly £1. Even if he were drinking pints of it, he's still 1.20-1.50 better off.

I agree that it's not much of an argument though - especially since that difference in drinks prices he's had back many, many times in free/heavily discounted meals.
