American touristsThere are some complete barking nutters in the deaf (and particularly Deaf) communities. I have seen the fitting of cochlear implants described, quite seriously, as "an act of cultural genocide against the Deaf", which certainly puts all those dead jews, gays and gypsies in context.
On the other hand, there are many, many more sensible, passionate, helpful and, well, just normal, people in the deaf/Deaf world who just don't get as much attention as the dingbats.

Tis faintly ironicthat the sensible folk are drowned out by the dingbats, as the deaf militants are usually the ones shouting loudest. Deaf joke just waiting to happen, there.
Shouty militants on their little fearquests... Pity they get the attention, but if they appear passionate enough, people listen. Its human nature - the same impulse that makes the Joanne clip newsworthy.
