History professor at a local university with a column in the Canberra Timesrecently publicly commented that secondary school history classes were not doing their job as first year students didn't know there had been two "world" wars: 1914 - 18 and 1939 - 45.

the same work colleague...* had to be reminded that not every firework display meant that it was guy fawkes night.
* was confused as to whether they were adult or senior citizen (asked two weeks before their 18th birthday)
the 'dinosaur using axes and other stone tools' prompted me to bring in and keep a pears cyclopaedia in the office as 'essential information'
