World Cup 1998In '98 I was stuck for 4 hours in a "Transit Lounge" (ie large empty room with one TV, one toilet and a water fountain) at LA airport with another Englisman and about 400 Americans.
The TV was stuck on one channel which was showing the World Cup. The Americans were complaining until USA v. Iran came on... cue much jingoism and nationalism and whoops about how they were going to stick it to them.
As the game wore on the Americans became less interested. My mate and I got louder and louder as the Yanks quietened.
When the Iranians scored their second goal we could barely shout as we were howling with laughter.
