# Oh woooooooouldn't it be loverly?

# I never realised the gay populace of this country was so low.
1.5% doesn't seem enough, somehow.

# I thought that too
but then I thought I've got a really close gay friend, I've known him since we were both 4, and through him I've met other gay friends so my experience is probably a bit skewed by being really close friends with someone in that 1 in 100 in the first place.

Dunno, just an idea.

# Where's that figure from?

# I suspect this figure is in no way reflective of the truth.

# Would you say more or less?
I think we all live in our own little worlds and it's impossible to say whether our own perceptions are anywhere near the actual figure. In my world it's probably about 20% but only for the reason I gave up there ^^^.
At work no one would admit to being gay so if you asked one of my engineers he'd probably say Elton John was the only gay man in the country.

# I would suspect more
it's hard to gauge such statistics for example would people who have had bi-sexual encounters consider themselves at least partially gay? It's one of those figures that can't possibly be accurate as people won't always say what they truly feel, which is one reason for some sham marriages where one partner or the other is just going through conventions to maybe hide their deeper feeling.

I can't say what the true figure is but I suspect far more than 1.5%

"Survey results vary depending on how you ask a question: would be my chosen headline" was how Ben Goldacre put it.

It's also the sort of survey which is going to be hard to get accurate results.

"1.5% are openly gay to strangers who phone up to ask them about their sexuality" is what it really shows.

I suspect that you'd find more accurate results from analysing the stats of porn sites which host both gay and straight content.

# "Analysing the stats of porn sites which host both gay and straight content?"
Oh look! The population is 80% lesbian!
