TJ: what GIF editor does everyone use? I've used Jasc Animation shop to do the ones I've made but it seems very basic and difficult to optimise down to below 400k. Just wondered if there was a better one people could recommend?

EDIT: Cheers all, will take a look at Photoshop

# Photoshop is the perferred method
After Effects will do the job as well without so much of the keyframing.

But I'm sure there are easier programs. Or the truth is I'm probably going all around the houses with it!

# ImageReady
although making changes to independent frames is a bitch

# yeah it's a pita
from what I can tell it pretty much forces you to duplicate all the layers and manually show/hide them if you intend on rotating an object or it insists on rotating every damn frame.

Optimising - cut out frames, work out roughly how many colours you're going to be able to get away with, and then try fiddling with colour options. Depending on the gif, making it fairly lossy seems to be a good way of cutting the filesize while retaining visibility. If all else fails, scanlines! :)

# The method I use is to create a group from the original layers
and for each new frame I duplicate the group (switching off the visibility before I duplicate) and then enabling the visibility of the new copied group which means I can perform any transformations without affecting the previous frames.

I also make liberal usage of the "Flatten Frames into Layers" if I want to make transformations on merged layers.

# Cheers all
The problems I have are not so much with transformation of layers and sets, more with toggling visibility of layers
on early frames then affecting all later frames. I think there's an option to override this but I can't seem to use it properly.

# there's an option
'propagate frame 1 changes' or something. But sometimes it seems to do it anyway.

# That's the one
but I seem to be Doing It Wrong
(, Mon 27 Sep 2010, 18:56, archived)
# Even with Propagate Frames switched off on the first frame
whenever you create a new layer it will be visible throughout the frames. A little tip go to frame 1 of your animation - Create your new layer then switch off it's visibility and then go to the frame you need and you can switch the visibility back on without effecting other frames saving you time. If you are duplicating a layer, switch off it's visibility before you duplicate and then switch on the visibility of the newly copied layer - that way it won't affect other frames.
