I also had to make the worst-ever cover illustration for a journal (actually, there are far worse, but it was as low as I could stoop to) for a paper called "Recurrent H-bond graph motifs between metal tris-ethylenediamine cations and uncoordinated oxalate anions: Fitting a three pin plug into a two pin socket"

I made it deliberately crap as a) it's still not crap by journal standards and b) when my old supervisor realises it'll cost him 500 quid for a cover, he'll quietly drop the subject...

No 3D software used (apart from for the crystal structure and then it was only added as a layer), so quite pleased with the cheesy effect.
