From 'My Neighbour Totoro'. Such a fantastic film.
(, Sun 29 Jun 2008, 22:47, archived)
# its a frickin' awesome
film indeed.
(, Sun 29 Jun 2008, 22:48, archived)
# the only thing that annoys me about that film
is that before i saw it, i thought 'tot or oh'
but the yank dubbing has it as 'tow tor oh'
(, Sun 29 Jun 2008, 22:49, archived)
# never watch
miyazaki with dubbing, always subs.
(, Sun 29 Jun 2008, 22:52, archived)
# bollocks to that
cartoons only work properly when dubbed
(, Sun 29 Jun 2008, 22:53, archived)
# Lies
the only miyazaki film that works well with the overdubbing is Spirited Away.
(, Sun 29 Jun 2008, 22:54, archived)
# howl's castle works fine dubbed
(, Sun 29 Jun 2008, 22:57, archived)

i love billy crystal a weird amount

# billy crystal, that's the chap
couldn't remember for a moment
(, Sun 29 Jun 2008, 23:01, archived)
# NO IT DOESN'T!
O_O

I have seen both the dubbed version and the subtitled version and seeeriously, the subtitled one has way more oomph to it.

Bah, I fully love foreign cinema and hate to see it raped by American dubbing :(
(, Sun 29 Jun 2008, 23:01, archived)
# I tend to find the one I watch first is the one I prefer,
whichever that may be. Some sort of indelible link between character and voice occurs.

/non-contribution
(, Sun 29 Jun 2008, 23:03, archived)
# well
i really love the miyazumaincky films
and i've only ever seen the dubbed versions

so i don't care
(, Sun 29 Jun 2008, 23:04, archived)
# well then your argument falls apart.
no matter.
(, Sun 29 Jun 2008, 23:07, archived)
# Don't get me wrong
They are still ACE dubbed.

Just not as ace as they are with Japanese.
It adds to the crazy and surreal vibe, I find.
(, Sun 29 Jun 2008, 23:07, archived)
# yesyesyes
i too have seen both, and violently agree
(, Sun 29 Jun 2008, 23:07, archived)
# Just how violently, exactly?
:)
(, Sun 29 Jun 2008, 23:11, archived)
# about as violently as those paper birds attack that dragon-boy
ooh i want to watch it again now! :D
(, Sun 29 Jun 2008, 23:14, archived)
# Neeeeevvvvvveeeerrrrrr!
*stab*
(, Sun 29 Jun 2008, 22:54, archived)
# shit off :)
i can't watch a proper film that's dubbed, but i can't be arsed reading a cartoon

akira is SO much better dubbed than subbed, and from that point on i have never bothered with subbed cartoons
(, Sun 29 Jun 2008, 22:56, archived)
# i'm cool with either, i don't really mind too much
but sometimes dubbing can be ace i.e patrickk stewart and alfred molina in Steamboy. sometimes it can be down right bizarre i.e. anna paquin in steamboy, playing a 12 year old mancunian boy
(, Sun 29 Jun 2008, 23:02, archived)
# seriously
american dubbing is shite.
(, Sun 29 Jun 2008, 22:57, archived)
# worth a download you say?
(, Sun 29 Jun 2008, 22:49, archived)
# definitely
but get the subtitled version!
(, Sun 29 Jun 2008, 22:51, archived)
# ^this
With every fibre of my being.

Subtitled films kick arse.
(, Sun 29 Jun 2008, 22:53, archived)
# it's like a BOOK and a FILM at the same time.
bonus.
(, Sun 29 Jun 2008, 23:01, archived)
# but you miss so much while you're reading
(, Sun 29 Jun 2008, 23:02, archived)
# Precisely!
It probably helps that my dad is deaf and I have grown up with subtitles on the telly, so I'm mega used to reading them quickly and still paying attention to what's going on. However, I am suuuure that having films in the original language makes them miiiles better.
(, Sun 29 Jun 2008, 23:04, archived)
# couldn't agree more
(, Sun 29 Jun 2008, 23:08, archived)
# *high five*
So what are your kinda top foreign films and stuff, if you have any?
(, Sun 29 Jun 2008, 23:11, archived)
# *fives back*
Most miyazaki stuff, Oldboy, Paprika, Battle Royale, City Of God, Letters From Iwo Jima.

These are all amazing films. You?
(, Sun 29 Jun 2008, 23:15, archived)
# letters from iwo jime hardly counts as foreign. it was directed by clint eastwood
(, Sun 29 Jun 2008, 23:20, archived)
# It was subbed though.
(, Sun 29 Jun 2008, 23:24, archived)
# Oldboy for the epic win.
One of my favourite films ever.

I lovelovelove Pan's Labyrinth.

Still a huge fan of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon too...

Letters from Iwo Jima was really good but it kinda narked me that it's an American Film, just feels weird.
Have you seen Brotherhood, by any chance?
(, Sun 29 Jun 2008, 23:20, archived)
# Yeh forgot to mention
Pans Lab and The Orphanage!!! Sry.

Yeh CrouchTiger/FlyingDaggers/Hero all good too.

Not seen brotherhood, I will now though. :)
(, Sun 29 Jun 2008, 23:23, archived)
# Brotherhood's properly good
All the Korean films I've seen have been stunning. Sort of weird, in some cases, but a treat for the old noodle nonetheless.

The Host is one of the crazy ones... I'm sure it makes more sense if you're actually Korean.
(, Sun 29 Jun 2008, 23:26, archived)
# Yesyesyes
Can be purchased for around £3 in many good Dvd stockists.

(, Sun 29 Jun 2008, 22:57, archived)
# i have no money at all at the moment.
i take the view that if someone genuinely cannot afford to pay to see or hear someones art then they should be allowed to see it free. i buy stuff when i can afford it and art is created to be witnessed. if it was me making a film i'd rather have people see my creation than get paid for it.
(, Sun 29 Jun 2008, 23:06, archived)
# Excellent point.
Plus, it makes you a Pirate and that's fun :)
(, Sun 29 Jun 2008, 23:09, archived)
# hmm
whilst i understand where you are coming from, i mostly* disagree

*'mostly' because i do indulge in piracy on occasion myself
(, Sun 29 Jun 2008, 23:11, archived)
# its also woth considering that those involved in the actual manufacturering of the movies (the actors, writers and directors)
have normally already been paid before the film is shown in cinemas so the only people losing any money are the big corporations who i have no love for at all
(, Sun 29 Jun 2008, 23:18, archived)
# YES!
