TJ: and on that note, I'm off to give blood. Laters everybody...

# good on you
although if they try to talk you into giving bone marrow too think long and hard before you do.

also - phone in sick tomorrow at work and say you gave blood and it's made you feel ill.

# Why?
Because of the pain? Or deeper issues?
(, Thu 6 Nov 2008, 13:50, archived)
# I was going to do it
really thought about it for a while but I had a few tests and they told me I couldn't.. also they were suggesting it would leave me off work for a while -- although this was a while ago and it could be better now...

# As far as I'm aware they still advise you to be off work for at least two days
I don't react well to anaesthetic, so it'd be risky for me.
(, Thu 6 Nov 2008, 13:53, archived)
# yeah - I was quite dissapointed when they told me
I'd probably need all my bone marrow... I think I'm one of those do gooders at heart.

# because of the pain
or the risks?
(, Thu 6 Nov 2008, 13:51, archived)
# both
I merrily thought about doing it until I was told I couldn't, but have spoken with people who have done it and they said it was very painful... but it's still very worth doing if you can and you don't mind the pain/risk/potential time off work.

# Are you on about the actual giving of marrow?
( which of course only happens after you are matched and both sides consent ) or just going on the registry? Being registered as a donor just takes some form filling and a small blood sample for tissue-typing.

# I tried to give blood in germany about 2 years back
and they said I couldn't since I had lived in the UK between 1981 and 1995, and probably was chock-full of BSE. Even germans who lived in britain for more than 6 months prior to 1995 are not allowed to give blood.

Moo.

# yikes
I once gave blood high when I was a student... and then realised what I had done a few hours later.

# "Mr Hammond, you've lost a lot of blood, we shall have to give you a transfusion"
Later...

"Actually, transfusions are quite nice. Do you have any crisps?"

either that or I get a visit from El Rozzers

# haha
Much as I'd like to think the drug squad screen the bags in the give blood van for traces of thc, I think you're safe.

Although, I didn't give blood for similar reasons when I was a student. One was supposed to be completely sober for three days prior to it apparently... or so I heard, so I didn't go when the van was there. Then came my stoner years when I forgot about anything that wasn't playstation, food, or weed related.

# *rozzers turn up a door with plastic bag full of red liquid*
is this YOUR blood sir?

... I was fooled into it - I was walking through one of the halls and sat down at a table full of cups of tea and tunncok's tea cakes, next think I know I've got a drip in my arm and a pretty nurse is telling me I have beautiful veins... it was all I could do not to make a very dirty joke. My head nearly burst from having to hold it in.

# I'm on the bone marrow register
and it's not a problem. I don't particularly want to give marrow but a few years back there was a local kiddie dying and needed a rare donor. The whole town got together and got tested for compatibility. As a result of that we still have the blood donor mobile service come and set up monthly in a local social club concert room.
It's no bad thing. There is a graphic artist who is dying and needs a rare donor in the States ( can't find the page again ). He's black and has a very rare marrow but anyone could be a match. It's worth the effort to register.

And that was my 15000 post. Fitting I guess.
