"The Underwater Realm" - Kickstarter-funded fantasy (for less than The Hobbit's coffee budget)
This is bloody impressive. Five shorts about man's interaction with an underwater race. Some seriously good UW camera work and acting, and something that deserves extreme kudos (and a towel). I wish 'em well.

It was from some kickstarter thing I think, somebody was requesting rather a lot of money, and in the breakdown of the costing they had £5000 for "catering".

As a bus driver for a living it's quite a stressful thing.
One of our drivers died by a skip-wagon ploughing into his cab after the skip-wagon driver tried to avoid another vehicle that came straight out of a junction. Our driver didn't stand a chance.

I made this!
Been a b3tan for many years but this is my first post ever on b3ta...
Also my first ever music video, the music comes from Bombay Monkey bombaymonkey.bandcamp.com
The whole track was inspired by the Pink Panther sketch. The lyrics sound like a bizarre alien dialect but they're all genuine types of dog. We had to compile a video of dog clips from the YouTube community and happily, found pretty much everything we wanted. Clips include: a dog on a jet ski, underwater dogs, dogs on trampolines etc etc.
Includes a clip of my own dog Bruce at 1:42 and 2:36 FTW!

That said, I don't know how powerful or painful stun guns are really
But just from a point of view of dealing with the situation with as minimal danger to the public and the man himself as possible, I'd say they did a pretty good job. He's clearly in an unbalanced state, so if a momentary paralysing shock saves his life and the lives of others... fuck it. Better than being shot aye!

Found the controls to be quite fiddly, but it was cool as hell. Was grinning like a loon throughout it.
Loved some of the dialogue in it, too, like on the boss fight in the demo:
"I possess an intellect far beyond human reckoning"
"You don't say. Okay then: What's the meaning of life? Why are we here?"
"I am here to kill you."
Definitely gonna buy it when it comes out. I like a good hack and slash action game, me. The new DmC was ace.

The best argument anti-Dawkins I've seen was by Parker and Stone...
"I'm counter-influenced by the neo-atheists, Richard Dawkins and those guys," Stone says. "I'm not convinced that truth is the most important thing in the world. Humans tell stories – that's what happens. I don't get [Dawkins'] trip."
www.guardian.co.uk/stage/2013/jan/04/book-of-mormon-stone-parker
Kind of changed my view from rationality=always best to rationality=best in science and politics but perhaps not in, say, art where a more emotional response in necessary.
People always try and view the world so they come out on top. If you are rational minded, it is easy to put that as the most important virtue rather than a single good virtue.

I've lost track of who is saying what these days
Problem is it's not a black and white argument. Some religious folk think along those lines saying they're just telling nice stories and having a communal sing song, others say fuck you you're going to hell if you don't follow this rule book. Some Atheists say all religion is evil and insane, look at science, others say, hold on, why are you asking me, I'm an atheist not an anti-theist.
the argument for each cause and against each cause is just shouty noise now.

There are twatty atheists and twatty religious people.
Somewhere along the line in this endless squabble, people seem to have forgotten that not being a twat trumps both being pious and being rational as a character trait.

surely the problem is when those stories are purported to be the truth?
truth might not be the most important thing in the world, but lies could be. When you start selling a story as the truth and supress any dissenting viewpoints then that is the death of stories as well as truth - they mention that scientology gave them hassle for one of their episodes, and I seem to remember them having to censor something they did about muhammad. This isn't truth versus fiction, its truth versus non-truth - myths and stories don't enter the equation as long as that is what they are acknowledged to be.

Outside of science, is the idea of truth not blurred, though?
Fiction can be a good way to express moral ideas, and most people structure their lives around the idea of a narrative that doesn't really exist.
Moderate religious people will usually take the more silly elements of their holy books as metaphors.
Religion, containing group mentality and unquestioning belief can easily be abused, and that abuse should be fought against. However, I'm unconvinced that a not-too-questioned belief in an afterlife is an unhealthy thing for people to have and I do think a lot of anti-religious sentiment can make the religious just act *more* fundamentalist, where it can become nasty.

outside of science there is no truth
only hope. You can hope there's an afterlife, and you can't prove there isn't one, but to go from there to making up bullshit and saying its real is just plain idiocy. And as you say, telling people to stop being idiots just makes them worse. All we can hope for is a steady drip of intelligence to wear down the mountain of bullshit over time.

I'm not sure
that there is anyone who doesn't live their life via beliefs which are equally as irrational as moderate religion. For example, plenty of people believe in the idea of "the one".
I agree it is idiocy, but I'm not sure religion has a monopoly on that type of thought or that type of thought cannot make people happy.
Fighting bigotry is admirable, but fighting all irrationality (as opposed to promoting reason) seems pretty pointless.

Good answer.
The fact that Dawkins (eg) is also so far from ever expressing the truth about himself - in the same way as religious fundamentalists - distances me from everything he does. It's just the same old power grabbing ideology and acting with different characters (it seems to me, anyway).
Then agai, I hate politics, am unimpressed by engineering and couldn't care less about space.
John Fante FTW.

Interesting
But as usual, pointless. All the religious people presume atheism as a belief; one actually referred to 'Scientism'. Atheism is a LACK of belief. Not the same thing at all.
EDIT: to clarify: I do not 'believe' there is not an Apache helicopter in my front room. There simply isn't. It wouldn't fit and I'd not be able to see the telly from the sofa.

I have sat in one!
It landed in the car park at work. I wasn't allowed to press any buttons though :(

I wish there was a transcript of that
I could only endure the collective smug/black-tie/"ooo get me in my little black dress and poncy chair"-ness for a few seconds

There are some right foxes in the background there.
I thought all female Cambridge students had hairy faces, bucked teeth and rode horses.

I understand Dawkins staunch views and position
but tolerance and understanding and respect have to be more important than bashing and criticism and baiting
I was always pure atheist, and thought that anyone who believed God was a fearful weak willed twat
then I took DMT and I'm agnostic now - all we can say for sure is that we don't know
but having said that the scientific method MUST be the way we go forward. believing in millennium old texts and cherry picking the bits that agree with our agenda and bigotry cannot be allowed to continue

The point was made in the debate.
Where does tolerance and understanding stop? I am not tolerant or understanding of female circumcision, burning witches or many other things religions do. Nor will I respect it.

fair enough
Apologies. I should have watched it instead of blundering in talking about me, me, me.
you're totally right though, I agree with what you say completely

I apologise too,
as my answer seemed a bit like a challenge and was not meant so. I just get annoyed when some religious people ask for tolerance when what they actually mean is 'This is what I do, let me get on with it no matter how vile and in return I'll be tolerant of you (although you are going to hell, so I win anyway)'. I think that attitude SHOULD be challenged but fully accept that wasn't your stance.
