Cold Callers
I actually find it difficult to believe that there are people out there who would voluntarily do this for a living.

Bills
need to be paid.

This.
I did it for an hour. It was horrific, but I needed the cash...

I expected this response
Surely there are more pleasant ways to earn money though?

Like taking part horrific medical trials that leave you permanently blinded, or mopping the shit off the floors in nightclub toilets?

The constant abuse and rejection you must get all day long as a cold caller would drive me insane pretty quickly, I'm pretty sure.

Quite often
It's better than the dole queue, if you want a shred of dignity rather than mump off the state all the time.

I guess what I'm trying to say is
I would rather take a job as a toilet cleaner or something else just as menial than take up a post as a cold caller.

I think there's only a certain amount of times I could get told to 'fuck off' or have the phone slammed down on me before I'd walk out into the street and start strangling kittens on sight.
(, Fri 4 Sep 2009, 14:39, closed)
I didn't actually have that option.
I was tricked into cold calling by my agency. I had been actively searching for a job and was given that one. You're lucky you've not had to do it. They aren't all cunts, you know.
(, Fri 4 Sep 2009, 14:41, closed)
Ah but you see
I have been that cold calling monkey and while the work is shite the money (if you are any good at it) can be very very good. You develope a thick skin and prey on the weak. It is the Urban Jungle... no really it is...

OK it isnt it is a job for cunts,

Have you ever actually done that kind of physical menial work?
Yes, call centre work is grinding and soulless. But it beats being on benefit, it's indoors, sitting down, there's no heavy lifting, very little risk of personal injury, you can wear your own clothes without them getting wrecked, it doesn't leave you smelling funny, and when people ask what you do for a living it's technically true to say you "work in an office".

You leave the building at the end of your shift and leave your work there too, which is nice. After the fifth person has told you to 'fuck off' it has about as much psychological impact as 'good morning'.

It isn't voluntary, if there isn't any work in the area apart from shelf-stacking or being a burger jockey in your local fast food emporium.
(, Fri 4 Sep 2009, 14:16, closed)
Ahhh
being a burger jockey.

All joking aside, despite being one of the lowest paid jobs I have ever had, was quite easily the most fun job I have ever had too.

my first job, at fifteen,
was with zenith windows, cold calling. I loathed it and said i would never do it again. I never would, either, in that i don't like cold calling people. Equally, if i want a new cellphone, or loan, i'll go look for one. However, i took a job as a stopgap nearly eight years ago, cold calling and selling to businesses. I hsve an excellent service, speak to bright people worldwide and get paid a lot more than some (although it is never enough and every month's cheque us just another target to beat). I'm off to dubai and the us soon, i help new offices get started, train others and i have to think on my feet. I work my holidays (to an extent), i'm under huge pressure, most people don't want to buy (but some do) and my market is great. It's challenging, tough and stressful. But i have responsibility for several people and about 1.4 million quid a year. My life is busy,, and i take calls at 2 in the morning from new zealand. People tell me to fuck off, secretaries and menials mess me about, but i love what i do.

Ah one thing worse than having a crappy job and a nasty flat would be - not having a crappy job and a nasty flat. I gave up on feeling hard done by years ago when I worked out that there is plenty worse.
