London(ish) b3tans
What do you say to another mini bash on Fri 1st or Fri 8th August? Somewhere where MM's dog can come along and somewhere Wanderlust can bring us tasty cakey goodness?
(, Tue 8 Jul 2008, 21:31, 127 replies, latest was 16 years ago)
I'm an (ish), I assume
I might be able to make that.
Depends on if I'm going down to Southampton any time.
(, Tue 8 Jul 2008, 21:38, Reply)
Don't forget
the midweek bash on either the 22nd or 23rd of July (damn those companies for taking ages to decide if they want to interview me).
(, Tue 8 Jul 2008, 21:40, Reply)
That should be fine.
I think either day is good with me.
If anyone has any special requests for cakes let me know!
(, Tue 8 Jul 2008, 21:40, Reply)
I can make either of these!
This is nothing sort of miraculous!

Quick, let's fix one and make a plan.
(, Tue 8 Jul 2008, 21:42, Reply)
Coffee cake?
Or carrot cake?
(, Tue 8 Jul 2008, 21:42, Reply)
Oh yum,
coffee cake.

We could have a picnic of sorts, if the weather's good, and then find a friendly pub.
(, Tue 8 Jul 2008, 21:44, Reply)
Carrot cake FTW
Puh lease carrot cake. I only tried it for the first time last week and oh dear god it's amazing :)

Ok, what date does everyone want most, I really don't mind as can't do weekends after that as I'm bunny sitting for a client, but 1st or 8th I'm free
(, Tue 8 Jul 2008, 21:48, Reply)
I vote
8th!
(, Tue 8 Jul 2008, 21:48, Reply)
If you're all very good and behave yourselves
I shall make a coffee and a carrot cake.
Carrot cake is always yummy though :D

Ms. W,
You are fantastic!
Even if I might not be there...
(, Tue 8 Jul 2008, 21:52, Reply)
Either date
I can't make so it doesn't matter. I'll see you at the August 23rd bash if I don't see you in the July ones.
(, Tue 8 Jul 2008, 21:52, Reply)
YAY!!!

Sorry for fuzzliness.

I've not really done much
Been a pretty much rubbish, boring, dull day. I wanted to go out and play frisbee, but couldn't.

And I haven't had as many girders of late, but only because I haven't been at work. When I'm back tomorrow, I'll have plenty. But yeah, toastie consumption is getting pretty bad.
(, Tue 8 Jul 2008, 22:40, Reply)
The dampness was the main reason
That I couldn't go out and play. That, and the fact that everyone else was working today. And that no-one else here plays ultimate.

There were many issues really.

I think the amount of cheese I am intaking won't be good for me.
(, Tue 8 Jul 2008, 22:43, Reply)
PoD
Cheese meanz strange dreams.

Where do you hark from?
(, Tue 8 Jul 2008, 22:45, Reply)
Awwww she's loverly :)
Would it be easier if we made it a Saturday or Sunday thinking about it as Friday after work isn't always conducive to a picnic vibe.

And are we aiming for the 1st or 8th at this point?

Needs to know for calendar
(, Tue 8 Jul 2008, 22:46, Reply)
There are rules when playing in a match
But it doesn't really matter if just messing about/practising.

Cheese may mean mean dreamz, but it also tastes teh awesome. Muchly teh awesome.

And I hail from south-west Scotland, that wonderful place. And yourself?

8th seems to be a popular choice

London town
we could play ultimate ultimate frisbee. Across the UK.
(, Tue 8 Jul 2008, 22:49, Reply)
Cool, will stick it in calendar
You know what? I fucking love the fact that my local supermarket is like rubbish sex. In and out in ten minutes flat. Door to door. None of the annoying old ladies in front of me mithering about stamps either :)
(, Tue 8 Jul 2008, 22:51, Reply)
We could try, MM
But my crappy elbow probably wouldn't manage that one unfortunately. Got to play lots in Ireland when I was over, on the beach. Well knackering.
(, Tue 8 Jul 2008, 22:54, Reply)
Is in calendar
for 8th August, but can easily be changed if necessary.

It's awesome!!!

Or at least it is if you are a student with very limited moneys.

I've never been to one either

(, Tue 8 Jul 2008, 23:11, Reply)
ikea sucks
Their furniture is a fuckin' heap of shit.
If you cost up the materials used in, say, a wardrobe, from there, it'd be worth less than a pound.

Yeah, advance tickets.
Only special cos I have money at the end of the month!
(, Tue 8 Jul 2008, 23:15, Reply)
I now feel
That everyone is going to look down on me for liking Ikea, but some of their stuff is quite good. Like the massive desks.

Rubbish!
It sucks.
(, Tue 8 Jul 2008, 23:17, Reply)
Kaol-
that's why everything costs about a pound. They do however make awesome kitchens.
(, Tue 8 Jul 2008, 23:17, Reply)
I once lived in a gorgeous
old house where everything inside was from Ikea. It just looked so wrong and everything broke within a few months. Wasn't impressed.
(, Tue 8 Jul 2008, 23:18, Reply)
WHAT ABOUT THE KITCHENS PPL???!?!?!
They are brilliant!

and you can't buy them in a charity shop
(, Tue 8 Jul 2008, 23:20, Reply)
If and when I one day have a house of my own
I want proper wood, but bearing in mind how expensive it is I'll probably go the charity shop route as you can pick up some really nice stuff.

*Has bench swiped from the kitchen table as tv stand in bedroom as it's nice*

Edit: Ooh Ikea finally got their catalogue online

@beckx
Actually, my ideal home would look like it blends in seemlessly with the surrounding countryside, but on the inside, resemble something out of an Ikea catalogue. That way, I can put up whatever posters etc. I wanted without them clashing with the ambience of the place.
(, Tue 8 Jul 2008, 23:23, Reply)
I am the clever mate
I dun built the kitchen from scratch. You still need to get the base units and doors from somewhere.

And drawers. You need drawers.

EDIT: What's great is that they don't break. I know people who've bought kitchens from Magnet and they've broken in a year. Ikea kitchens just go on living.
(, Tue 8 Jul 2008, 23:24, Reply)
You know,
I might actually be able to make this one.

Meh- we rent the place out to two other blokes so display shelves are waaaay out.

There is an element of funtionality.

Building stuff yourself is great. I should post photos of what we did in our year of renovation
(, Tue 8 Jul 2008, 23:29, Reply)
@ancrenne
If you're renting a Victorian-era flat with fancy wallpaper, puting up posters does create a feeling of discord.

If on the other hand it had Ikea-catalogue style blank walls, I can put up whatever I want.
(, Tue 8 Jul 2008, 23:30, Reply)
I think my hatred of catalogue stuff
stems from Fight club where he has the homogenised apartment and it's all identikit crap.

My flatmate must think I'm nuts
as I just wandered down the hallway saying Marmoleum loudly in a spacktastic voice :) On a brighter note she has cleaned the kitchen for the first time since I moved in 3 months ago. No piles of stuff anywhere :)

*looks in shower*

Nope

*looks in hall closet*

Nope, she must have actually cleaned and put it away. Mazing. Then again she cleans her pots and pans with toilet cleaner - ajax - so I wonder how long she'll last now.

Have you told her how bleach is great for detoxing your insides yet?
(, Tue 8 Jul 2008, 23:59, Reply)
Lord no
That would mean communication. Something she's not good at considering it's still three one sentance conversations in 3 months now ;)

*is happy about it*

Right.

@beckyjsbx
I think you said she was from somewhere in Eastern Europe. Does she not communicate because she doesn't understand English very well?

EDIT: See ya MM
(, Wed 9 Jul 2008, 0:09, Reply)
Spakka
if you mean do I see her in the kitchen or hallway and try to strike up conversation with her then no. If I hear her then it's usually when I'm in bed at night or still waking up in the morning as we don't keep the same schedules. I've been in the same room as her 3 times and once was on the stairs at that as we both have jobs, she has a fiancee and we don't have a living room to socialise in. We eat at different times and therefore rarely see each other despite living in the same flat.

It suits me fine as my last flatmate said she found the same when she lived with her for 3 years and when they were in the same room she found her to be very standoffish and cold.

Ancrenne, for all we know she's reading this. I'm sure she heard me bitching about her on the phone last night which is why the kitchen is now spotless. Feel a bit bad, but I shouldn't have to do that in order for her to clean up her own mess.

Edit: Night MM

@beckyjsbx
Post-it notes are your friend.

Is she doesn't get the hint, don't write on a single post-it note, just arrange several in a word-like formation.
(, Wed 9 Jul 2008, 0:19, Reply)
That's not my style
I'd rather just have it out with her and say "look you're not a child, you've lived here x amount of years, so you know what it's like living with other people. Clean up your stuff after you've used it and we wont have nearly as many flies in the kitchen."

Last time we spoke was when she shoved newspaper down the toilet as I stopped providing it as she never replaced it.
(, Wed 9 Jul 2008, 0:33, Reply)
If I ever saw her
I would. Haven't caught a glimpse of her since the toilet thing. Just seen more and more stuff piling up, bitched on the phone last night and now the kitchen is clean. Hopefully she's now got the message.
(, Wed 9 Jul 2008, 0:40, Reply)
.
@ancrenne:
If you want multicoloured post-it notes, try sorting them horizontally by hue and vertically by brightness. If using the 3rd dimension, sort them by saturation this way.

@beckx:
If you've only spoken to her 3 times, perhaps the fourth time should be when you have that conversation. If you suspect she cleaned up because she overheard you bitching about her on the phone, the 'have it out with her' approach will bear fruit.
(, Wed 9 Jul 2008, 0:41, Reply)
I'd tell 'em
Then I'd tell then again if it happened again.

The third time I'd get angry.
And I don't lose my temper very often at all.

I'm... Here
But not really 100% focused on QOTW, mind is wandering elsewhere.

You got your presentation all written?
(, Wed 9 Jul 2008, 1:08, Reply)
I have a child's mind in a grown up's body
so here I am to entertain you.

I'm also not so focused. Have been putting together a post or two for the off topic section (which I'll post tomorrow). In the meantime, I've been replying to other QOTW answers such as this one.
(, Wed 9 Jul 2008, 1:16, Reply)
I've never taken any psychadelics before
but I often try and give myself the challenge of mentally re-constructing that state of mind, or at least trying to concieve of how much my perception would have to change to be in that state.
(, Wed 9 Jul 2008, 1:21, Reply)
I stay away from thant kind of thing
If I can hallucinate weird, disturbing stuff when I'm not on anything, it's not a good idea to go messing around too much.

EDIT: As you say ancrenne, my chemicals in my brain are a bit off by default.
(, Wed 9 Jul 2008, 1:30, Reply)
*nods*
I've got too much of some things, not enough of others.

It's easy-ish to fix with pills, but then I'm not "me".
(, Wed 9 Jul 2008, 1:33, Reply)
.
@ancrenne:
That is definitely true what you said about not knowing what to aim for. I personally prefer to do my perception-altering by software-means instead of hardware-means if you know what I mean. However, I've read plenty of accounts. I'm aware I may never even scratch the surface, but using my arsenal of insights I have in myself, the way the brain works, and other geeky stuff, I like to give myself the intellectual (and sometimes spiritual) challenge of immagining what it would be like. More of my thoughts can be found in this old post of mine.

@Kaol: Does this have anything to do with the story you posted?
(, Wed 9 Jul 2008, 1:38, Reply)
Spak:
It has everything to do with that post.

ancrenne: *grins* I'm glad you agree...
(, Wed 9 Jul 2008, 1:46, Reply)
@ancrenne
That's true. I recon the ammount of groundwork that would need to be covered (eg. to expand the English language to be able to better explain these things) would just be too overwhelming, and even then, it would be mostly subjective. I keep meaning to read "The Doors of Perception", keep starting it but never get round to finishing it.

BTW, I don't take the 'challenge' too seriously - it just gives my brain something to think about when idling.

EDIT: @Kaol: Thanks for sharing that post with us. All of a sudden, I have greater insight into your mind.
(, Wed 9 Jul 2008, 1:51, Reply)
So you're saying that I'm like a set of handmade shelves?
Thanks :p
I do know what you mean, don't worry.

Spakka, it's not quite as simple as that, I'm afraid, but I'm glad that you don't know what it's like. It's not much fun.
(, Wed 9 Jul 2008, 2:02, Reply)
Shared hallucinations
One theory I have about that is that all our conciousnesses are somehow interlinked. Our body's materialistic desires repress that part of our conciousness. Perhaps opening the doors of perception helps you get in touch with the shared conciousnes.
(, Wed 9 Jul 2008, 2:11, Reply)
Interlinked consciousness?
I see it as this:

Two more-or-less identical machines, given the same input will process to give very similar data.
(, Wed 9 Jul 2008, 2:13, Reply)
.
It's just a theory. But needless to say, two human minds are anything but identical. EDIT - even if they've had many similar experiences.

Speaking of conciousness, my mind is drifting off so I'm heading to bed. I might post something on the QOTW tomorrow about how the human conciousness is something that's unexplained.
(, Wed 9 Jul 2008, 2:19, Reply)
You're talking software
I'm talking hardware.

It doesn't matter if your PC is running Linux or OSX, you're still going to get 2+2=4 out of it.

In purely physical terms, organs are chunks of special meat.
The special-ness comes from the cells that they're made of. Take a brain cell from me, takae one from you, they're 99.999% identical.
So overall, our brains are the same, hardware-wise.

EDIT: Night Spak!
