There was a superman costume at the end of a Dark Horse Superman/Tarzan crossover by the late, great Carlos Meglia (which he used again in Superman Infinite City) which was splendid! Kinda like a 1930s, Rocketeer thing.
The black superman costume is a good redesign, too, as it shows someone thinking outside of the box.

i think the red cape is very iconic, so they would never have got rid of that for the filmwhat about the 'reign of superman' after he did
