# and i blame you
for having a biased "Slashdot" mentaility
(, Thu 21 Aug 2003, 1:47, archived)
# I've never understood that.
Is slashdot mentality "linux is greatest. Windows sucks."

I sort of feel the same way..but just because I'm skint and windows costs too much. But linux is pretty shite at most things.

maybe slightly drunk.

# linux stuff
yh but linux is more stable . . . and better when u kno wot ur doing . . . and its FREE!

p.s . . . wots WRONG with the Slashdot mentality?

# "linux is more stable"
Have you ever pulled out the power plug? Kiss your filesystem goodbye.
(, Thu 21 Aug 2003, 1:51, archived)
# "Kiss your filesystem goodbye"
and what happens if u do that with windows? . . . oh yes u get scandisk

so in linux u have . . . fsck!
(, Thu 21 Aug 2003, 1:54, archived)
# I don't get scandisk.
It just..boots. And I do it a lot..because I'm lazy.
(, Thu 21 Aug 2003, 1:55, archived)
# Well
NT systems dont do that shit.

Win2K is nice when I suck up all 1 Gig of RAM, 128MB of VideoRAM and full my scratch disk up to full & max my Processor (2.4Ghz) and have it crash. It just reboots and starts like I'd just turned it on.

Had I have to go through scandisk, it'll only take a blink anyway Mahhahahaa !

# I have Win2K
& have never found scandisk
(, Thu 21 Aug 2003, 2:15, archived)
# I dont think its there...
It may be there in the OS but I dont think its active. Maybe you'd have to really screw the pooch ( not to mention crash it badly ) for it to appear.

I hardly ever actually crash the system, only when I have photoshop, ImageReady, Q3A, GTKRadiant, and 2 instances of Gmax ( Tempest ), Winamp ( 2.9 ), MSN, Norton AV, and notepad open and I want to open up something else & find myself to lazy to close something off first.
(, Thu 21 Aug 2003, 2:24, archived)
# hahah, you've never found scandisk?
must have a really shite version of win2k here....doesn't help when tattyslop 7 memory leaks and fucks the system in the ass after 2 days
(, Thu 21 Aug 2003, 2:28, archived)
# Nope,
I've got Win2k with SP3 included in the Install ( SP4 is Evil, I refuse to get it until theres fixes for the things it fixes.) & I've only ever crashed it when I've opened to much up, which is very rare.

Only got PS6, and just updated it to 6.0.1 today. Havent noticed any problems with it.

The one thing that is screwy is IE6, I've found some sort of bug to do with having over 10 forms on a page & bg images in CSS. Cant redraw the page and spazzes out leaving me with a lovley pattern in the window which turns into a whole GUI problem if I leave it open for long.
(, Thu 21 Aug 2003, 2:35, archived)
# sp4? Barf! I only put SP3
on when I found the leeetle app that enabled the OK button without actually agreeing to anything the beast wants. I'm on a bog-standard install with 100% compatible hardware and drivers and it STILL breaks. Good job I expect it on a regular basis and keep everything important on a machine that doesn't run a microsloth OS :)

mmmmm VMS

# if legal . . .
and how much did u pay 4 ur NT/2k licences?
(, Thu 21 Aug 2003, 2:20, archived)
# Not sure about...
Licences for one copy to be used over multiple systems because all the PC's here at home are OEM's.

We sell Computers from home so everything is cheaper than what you pay for it in the shops because we get it wholesale. I know for retail ( from most store brought systems ) there's a 200% markup on XP home, 300% Markup on XP Pro. But I'm not sure what current prices are for Win2k.

Ok, I do it by accident when plugging in a dodgy old machine that I should really check over first, but the webserver has come back up every time.....

# On a debian box I use occasionally, everytime I unplug it / there's a powercut
Poof. It won't boot. Obviously tried fsck, etc. Maybe just the harddrive's knackered :)

although its more of a "lolomfglmao i r l33t h4><0r windows is complete and utter shite even tho im using it on my pc right now, linux is great and the penguin is my god, but ive not got a fucking clue how to use it"

or something...
(, Thu 21 Aug 2003, 1:52, archived)
# Yeah.
I have very little clue howto use linux. I know enough to do basic stuff though, that's really all I need. And I doubt linux will ever overtake windows for desktop machines - it's too fucking hard to use!
(, Thu 21 Aug 2003, 1:53, archived)
# heh,
how, exactly? For an average user that needs desktop icons and a printer to do stuff?
(, Thu 21 Aug 2003, 1:55, archived)
# Actually, I've never used linux gui's.
That might be why, heh.

recent GeForce stuff right back to Matrox Millennium 2 which is what the current webserver's using 'cos I can't be arsed to build in serial console control in the current kernel!

that was far too geeky for well after 2 in the morning
(, Thu 21 Aug 2003, 2:20, archived)
# true, it proberbly never will
and its just hard to use because people have been moulded into an ignorant mass who are afraid of using a command line interface. they are all too used to windows, which isnt nessicerily a ad thing, its good its good points and its bad points, but so has linux...
