I don't think they have to be.
the christmas and Halloween ones are coloured aren't they?
Does it push up the filesize by a crucial KB though?

less than 100 bytes more
so not that bigger deal really is it? and that's the robin one, which uses more colours than the others, i think

To be honest
I think it might be more the fact that lots of people using different coloured icons would make the board look rather garish.
(
supermoore: HUNG, Tue 20 Jul 2004, 18:30,

yeah
garish, but colourful! =)

The 'learner' icon has red too.
I do remember when they originally were asking for submissions, greyscale was one of the rules. As was 'no animation'.

i still remember people debating
whether a pacman icon that ate the subject's username was a good idea.
it was painful viewing.
(
Sunshine Elephant, Tue 20 Jul 2004, 18:30,

Yep
they do have to be greyscale.
I think colour is only used on special occassion icons - christmas and halloween etc.

By simply
adding a T to your name you would progress from naive to native. Another magical whirl with an asortment of letters and you could be narrative.
