# ok, this has inspired me to ask:
What does everyone have on their bookmarks toolbar?

(, Mon 27 Jun 2005, 16:21, archived)
# nothing
it`s a waste of screen space

(I set my history to expire after about a year)
(, Mon 27 Jun 2005, 16:23, archived)
# bah.
It's a waste of screen if you run at 800x600.

Run at 1600x1200 or higher and all of a sudden your browser has full buttons _and_ is never maximised.

# but can you actually make anything out at that resolution?
(, Mon 27 Jun 2005, 16:28, archived)
# Yeah.
But I don't suggest anything smaller than a 19" monitor.
(, Mon 27 Jun 2005, 16:29, archived)
# you can, but you need a big monitor
I`ve a 17" TFT and it only goes up to 1280x1024, and my laptop only does 1024x768

plus I have the web developer tool bar on Firestoat, which I think is infinitely more useful than bookmarks for the 6 sites I always go to
(, Mon 27 Jun 2005, 16:29, archived)
# Thanks to your suggestions
I now have Ubuntu up and running with Apache, and MySQL servers... Just a little more fettling to do and i'll be joining that rarified group of home website serving types!
(, Mon 27 Jun 2005, 16:35, archived)
# brilliant
ubuntu is all teh nice

just remember that b3ta will trash your upload if you`re hosting files at home, so keep `em as small as possible!

# Heh...
Its worth a try, though - i've not exactly been prolific recently, so i doubt there will be too much traffic.

Ubuntu does seem a hell of a lot more user-friendly than SuSE which i tried initially.. Not least because of the great forum and unofficial guide..

# aye I used SUSE for years
but it`s not updated often enough, and I found that the security updates always crashed samba (something to do with their YAST tool, because the updates hardly ever concerned samba) to the point of the machine having to be rebooted

new install has been up for 16 days.. so far so good :)
(, Mon 27 Jun 2005, 16:45, archived)
# Trying to install nVidia drivers on Ubuntu
gave me an amusing white flashing screen problem requiring a hasty reinstall... But given its no games machine i'm happy enough to leave them off. SuSE just seemed to want to break my monitor by running it at as high a refresh rate as possible.

Any tips or handy web-links about making the machine secure? I have a handy router that can be set to forward port 80 traffic only specifically to the PC in question...

# ermm the nvidia.. *thinks*
from what I remember you need to apt-get nvidia-[something]; you then run the nvida-config tool or whatever it`s called, and it`ll generate all your X11 configs automatically - it`s devilishly simple

definitely use the router to keep naughty traffic out, maybe keep an X11 session running over VNC with synaptic, so you can connect every evening and check for any updates (also subscribe to their security mailing list - very low volume of e-mails) and then have a look at maybe bastille for locking stuff down, and possibly chkrootkit in a cron job to check for other nasties

# Cheers guys...
I'll check all that out. Happy bedtime reading!

The nvidia thing *shrugs* from what i read apt-get nvidia-whatever is the long and short of it; just didn't seem to like my set-up/card/face. Not really bothered - runs at 1280x1024 with just what ever standard drivers are part of the distro. Good enough for me.
