the world would be a happier place if pop-music didnt exist....

(particularly in his early days) there wouldn't have been any rock, punk or other similar styles of music as we know them now, which
'push the envelope' a little in terms of what is acceptable.

he wasn't responsible personally for 'stealing it', and you've kind of undermined your own stance, as without him, that
style of music, and many others, may not have had the mass impact they did, as his rendition of them,
particularly in the face of conservative 50's america, helped pave the way for punk, rock and a whole host of styles

Since the 1950s, his face made the impact on American and world culture of Elvis Presley - singer and music icon has been recognized.
According to Rolling Stone Magazine, "it was Elvis who made rock 'n' roll the international language of pop." A PBS documentary described Presley as "an American music giant of the 20th century who single-handedly changed the course of music and culture in the mid-1950s." His recordings, dance moves, attitude and clothing came to be seen as embodiments of rock and roll. His music was heavily influenced by African-American blues, Christian gospel, and Southern country.

but it was the cross over of blues music into rock for the white American market which allowed all those other types of music to come about...

it wasn't just about the music either, but rather what he became to many, the ultimate 'pop' star

Elvis?
While I'm no great fan I have to say that the less over-played and infintely fresher early recordings e.g. the Sun sessions are pretty fucking good and well important in terms of how popular music's developed

There are many bands / artists I don't like. The Beatles and Hendrix are good examples, I cant stand either of them, but I appreciate what they have done for the music industry and the development of musical styles.
(, Fri 14 Sep 2007, 12:04, archived)
I can listen to them, and appreciate what they did, but I can't say I've ever been a big fan

Only certain songs interest me. But I know why they are important. there are a few band like this.

I play the guitar and do not like hendrix. I don't find him all that interesting as a guiatrist or song writer.
BUT i do know how important he is to the development of rock, blues, jazz, pop.. etc. I don't know why people find this hard to believe.

but then again this is my personal opinion, and im sure that if I started raving about some of my fave bands people would disagree with me.

Each to their own, some people love it, others just don't understand the hype. that's the best and worst thing about humans. personal opinion, it's just a shame that not all people are as tolerant of other peoples choices.

but there are a bunch of artists that I really like and I'm glad to support. Because emusic don't have drm but only mp3, the big majors don't work with them, and you get mostly independent/small producers and older stuff. The Smithsonian/Folkways collection is there, for example.
They are a bit annoying as they make you believe you have to register to see the catalogue, but it's not true: www.emusic.com/artist/10565/10565498.html (100% horse free)

that he knows what he likes and that is really all that counts. admittedly it's never up to one person to talk down anothers musical tastes, and on that count he's being a bit severe in his put-downs.
but just because he dislikes a musical style doesn't mean he knows fuck all about ALL music.
