They make the
shittest lift ever.
We've got them at work and they're bloody dangerous and never call at the floor you want as well as having no memory of who's pressed what button.
They're about as good as his bloody howitzer shells...

I've heard of drummers putting towels, foam or sponges in the bass drums, to make it sounds less harsh

that is a good plan... one can also loosen the bass pedal a bit so the mallet doesnt strike as hard.

Drum pads are what you're after.
Dense rubber pads in various sizes that go over the skins.
Doesn't do anything for the cymbals and adversely affects the responsiveness of the drums. Not very nice to use, but would do the job.
EDIT: 'Practice Pads' is probably the more commonly used term.

you can get pads,
but they make it just sound pretty wank, brushes are generally quieter, or just make the son hit them not as hard!
