# I installed "ubuntu" from the cd image last night.
And have no idea how to use it AT ALL.
CD checks ok, but choosing the ubuntu option from the boot menu takes me to a dos-like command line interface rather then the gnomeish prettiness I had been led to expect.
anyone know what I should do?

# set up an IRC bounce and share all your music.
I jest. Does it give you a login prompt?

# no
It works correctly if I run it direct from the LiveCD though, which is odd.

I may try and remove and reinstall it.
I'm terrified of hurting my XP install though, as that contains all my StuffTM

# there's probably some code or other you should use at boot
but trying to find out what they are is impossible. i'd actually recommend not using ubuntu anyway because it's shit. i was trying to use it a month or so back and i had the same kind of problem; it turned out that it was a hard drive problem, and i had to add a line to the boot (so hit f6 when the ubuntu screen flashes up), something about raid or ide controllers.

but finding this again has proved problematic.

i'd also recommend backing up your xp stuff. it should be fine -- linux won't repartition your drive if you check very carefully anything it tries to do with the word "partition" in it, but things can go weird. i think suse decided to repartition my drive without telling me. suse's also shit. don't use it...

edit: try using "noscsi" or "noacpi" at boot.

# Have you tried Wubi?
I can't speak from personal experience (Debian man myself), but I've been told it's a good way to install Ubuntu, which does all the partitioning for you and works around your Win XP install without interfering with it. I'd recommend having a good read of the Wubi website before trying it, but it might be an easier/safer option than trying to partition everything by hand.

# Wubi should actually be on the liveCD now
you should be able to run the install from within Windows.

# I think overall I need to do lots more research and start over again.
I'm only doing it to see what it's like, really, so no real pressure.

# Hmm.
If you're not getting any kind of login prompt it makes me think something's tripping up in your init stuff.

When you start it up, if you gaz me the last few lines of text it gives you I may be able to diagnose.

# If I remember this when I get home drunk tonight
I may do so, thanks for the offer.
