It's kind of the nuclear option
It prevents you seeing all their posts (and therefore all the replies to those posts) and also prevents them seeing yours (and the replies).
I'm not a fan, because as others have said, if you don't hear alternative views you end up in your own echo chamber. Besides, for all the fuckwittery you miss, sometimes the responses to the fuckwittery are the most entertaining.
