This is a link post Chinese Farmer Makes His Own Bionic Prosthetic Hands.
"Sun Jifa, from China's northern Jilin province, lost both his hands when a fishing explosive went off prematurely in his home nine years ago.

Eager to get his hands back, Sun spent the next eight years crafting his own steel bionic pair from scratch with little direction but his own intuition."

He's now making and selling them to other amputees at a price far cheeper than the hospitals.

He only started dabbling once it became necessary to replace his arms, basically when he lost them, and replace them with something suited to farming, with the need being to continue to farm so he could support his family.

It was only afterwards that people started to come to him to ask for replacements for themselves, i don't think he expected that to happen, he just wanted to be able to continue to be able to work and support his family, now he seems to be even better off.

Fair play that man.
