The ham-faced twat got no laughs for his Pistorius jokes. From what I can see, it's not because they were contraversial but because they contained no material to laugh at.

i'm not keen on jimmy carr because i don't think he's naturally funny, a lot of his delivery feels quite forced
but i must admit that did make me laugh

He can be good
But sometimes he goes down the route of shock over quality. In this instance, the jokes just weren't funny.

A bit of both I guess
Spitting out jokes about recent events like that out of the blue will sink like lead half the time, anywhere. An audience being filmed with reputations to worry about are also less likely to laugh along with controversial material. As you say, he also actually forgot to insert any humor, which is reasonably critical if you want to make people roar with mirth
