he sounds sexier than usual
I'm in favour of gun control, but wonder how difficult it would be to enforce in some of the US states. Of course they can start by stop selling new high powered fire arms, but how much money do guns and ammo generate for the US economy and who decides if that is more important than the tragic killing sprees they have every year?

The problem is they've made their own bed now,
the gun lobby often come out with the old line "if guns were outlawed, only criminals would have guns." Sadly, there's a truth to it. Guns are so easily available on the black market that outlawing them would be something of an exercise in futility - most of the really problematic firearms are already illegal anyway, and they're not just going to disappear if the law-abiding folk give theirs up.

Is America really that much like the wild west?
with gun fights in every house that is burgled, standoffs in streets when someone tries to snatch a bag, etc?
I've seen maybe a handful of examples of armed citizens "defending themselves" against armed attackers.
And if the armed attackers are still risking it, surely the gun the "good guys" have, isn't a deterrent anyway?

But there are studies in which areas with higher gun ownership have less crime. Both Yale and Harvard (not exactly right wing) studies show this
A NY newspaper decided to "out" gun owners in its county, publishing names and addresses. It was a bad thing because many of those gun owners are police and penitentiary guards who have families. So, a blogger decided to "out" the journalists on that paper.
The paper's response? They were so afraid that they hired armed guards to protect them from potential crazies. They didn't worry about who would be harmed when someone else might die.
And at least in the wild west both parties were armed, not just the bad guys.

How much does a study like that really mean though?
people with criminal convictions aren't buying guns legally, are they still counted in the statistics? also, they might share communal guns so have less of them.

I don't know about you, I'm sick of the young and lazy coming along and degrading English. It's really gotten out of hand.

I saw a map that showed the opposite correlation once,
maybe I can find it again. But the correlation is quite difficult. The highest gun ownership tends to be in rural areas, which also corresponds to poverty, and high crime rates usually follow poverty.

That's an interesting anecdote, I hadn't heard it before.
Do you have any links to the studies you mention?

Not quite but there is a lot of gang warfare in some places,
and illegal guns are really easy to get hold of. No thanks to this:

The US Government really does treat people like expendable pawns,
I can kind of understand the paranoia of the gun nuts who want to protect themselves.

Those "stalin and mao banned guns" arguments are unbelievably retarded.
Do they think there were no guns being used by the communists during the russian revolution and chinese civil wars?

Stalin came to power after the Revolution, comrade.
And as I read, set about to prevent any such revolution against himself. He did some really bad things and killed more than Hitler ever dreamed of.

so revolutionary communists were using guns to protect themselves from the state and completely justified
it was only a few ruling communists who were the bad ones?
is that the american far right's interpretation?

You would have to ask the far right
Stalin's move came long after the revolution. He disarmed because he did not like dissent.
And history shows the murders and purges that Stalin accomplished. He was glad to use the comrade term and call himself a Communist while never espousing any of the doctrine. He was a murderous dictator that subjugated a nation and killed any detractors. It's all out there for you to read.
