This is a question Redundant technology

Music on vinyl records, mobile phones the size of house bricks and pornography printed on paper. What hideously out of date stuff do you still use?

Thanks to boozehound for the suggestion

Morse Code (CW)
much prefer it to Voice, it goes further with less power. On 10 watts I can work the world direct.

you wanna know redundant?
I was the last course in the British army required to pass 20WPM in morse.

So, basically sarge, I have to pass this course, at 20WPM, or I don't get my signaller's pay, and can't get any kind of advance in seniority, and have to spend 6 months listening to fucking tapes on a fucking walkman like I'm communicating with moonbase alpha, and yet I also know that the day I pass the course, I not only will have to never use morse again, but there will never be anyone else to transmit it to?

We should have a bad motivation QOTW, come to think of it.

but yes, you're quite right, you don't know geek smug until you've made comms with Cyprus using a barbed wire fence in herefordshire as a 60m skywave dipole on 5 watt send. Stick your 24meg broadband up your pipe...

Actually that's quite good going for NVIS
I didn't know Cyprus had the 5Mhz allocation.

Well, I haven't had my amateur radio callsign since 1994 - I let that lapse back then. I did manage to get up to 12 words per minute.

I was actually disappointed when I read that you no longer had to know Morse to get a license.
(, Tue 9 Nov 2010, 8:31, closed)

You still need to know morse for the Signals Exam for merchant navy... only at 9wpm (i think) though
