Gotta say thatgiving your boss the heads up that you're going to dob them in for doing something wrong isn't the most forward thinking plan of action. Unless you're looking to leverage them & even then it's a bit thin-ice-ish.

this is what i meant by moralistiche believed that coming clean was the right thing to do and told the captain this, under the mistaken belief that the captain would agree with him and do the right thing.
he's not exactly mr. cunning.
