I just went to Boots to buy some co-codamol.
My prescription for codeine is running out and I don't see the GP until Thursday morning. The pharmacist refused to sell it to me on the grounds that I'm visibly pregnant. I wouldn't mind so much if they hadn't already dispensed my prescriptions for codeine (twice the strength of over-the-counter stuff) and tramadol within the past fortnight.

Another night of pain, yay.

Can't you get some kids to buy it for you?

(, Tue 16 Mar 2010, 15:58, closed)
In a fit of pique, having explained the circumstances,
I said "fine, I'll get someone else to buy it for me" and flounced out of the shop. Completely twattish on my part but it made me feel better.

I'm amazed that Boots care that much.
When I was living near Gloucester Road, they use to have 'Methadone Monday' in Boots, loads of wired kids would be there calling the chemist 'sir' and politely asking if they could have the sugar-free one next time.

It's gone upmarket now.
We're all delis and boutiques north of the arches. I'll send Catface down Stokes Croft later to pick up a packet.
(, Tue 16 Mar 2010, 16:11, closed)
Do you have to get your passport stamped at the Cat and Wheel these days?

(, Tue 16 Mar 2010, 16:12, closed)
Yes, plus you switch to the foreign language edition of the Evening Post

(, Tue 16 Mar 2010, 16:16, closed)
I can't belive that that beyond the Arches has gone all organic
You'll be telling me you can buy tapas up that way now.

(Saying that, the pubs up there have improved no end over the last 4 or 5 years, The Flyer is now a pub I'd look forward to visiting).

Have you tried smack?
It's much stronger.
(, Tue 16 Mar 2010, 16:00, closed)
Can you get it OTC or on prescription?

(, Tue 16 Mar 2010, 16:03, closed)
I once took two of my mums co-codamol when we ran out of paracetamol and I had a head cold.
I went to bed and woke up half an hour later with the room spinning.

And it's not a strong painkiller! I've hardly lived!
(, Tue 16 Mar 2010, 17:26, closed)
You have two mums?
Well, I suppose it is the 21st century.
(, Tue 16 Mar 2010, 20:39, closed)
Are you sure it's the codeine they object to?
Only asking because I know paracetamol can be a problem in high doses (such as those a foetus may recieve) and the ammount of codeine in most OTC cocodamol is low. If I'm wrong, sorry, but please make sue I am?
(, Tue 16 Mar 2010, 18:18, closed)
Nah, paracetamol is supposedly fine to take in pregnancy (in the correct dose). It's about the only thing that's deemed fine to take.
I think they're just being really cautious about the codeine. It's a Class B drug in the UK, I think. They refuse to sell to anyone who seems like they might be addicted to codeine-based painkillers as well.

(Disclaimer: I'm not a pharmacist. I don't even play one on the Internet.)

Furry muff...
Many apowlogies and please rant away.
I think I have Paracetamolophobia -- I'd have to re-read about Codeine but I didn't think it was a problem drug or, indeed, dangerous.
(, Tue 16 Mar 2010, 19:12, closed)
It's all about licensing.
OTC codeine isn't licensed for sale to certain people, including pregnant women. When your doctor prescribes it, he or she is giving it out under the licensing that applies for prescribd medications.

I may be missing something though.
(, Tue 16 Mar 2010, 20:47, closed)
Yeah, makes sense.
It's perfectly reasonable, it's just that I only have 3 x 30mg codeine to do me for the next 36 hours (plus some ineffective tramadol that makes me vomit).
(, Tue 16 Mar 2010, 20:50, closed)
Have you tried
Putting on something loose fitting and trying another pharmacy?
(, Wed 17 Mar 2010, 14:12, closed)
I heart tramadol
and have a prescription for another 400 due any time now...
