This is a question Mix Tapes

Everyone's made a mix tape (or CD, USB stick, or whatever kids do these days). Mostly to get in someone else's pants, but we're sure there are other, lesser, reasons too.

So, who did you make it for and why?
And... what was on it?

my ultimate mix tape
would feature:

- the Shipping Forecast
- the Today programme
- In Our Time
- Book at Bedtime
- Book of the Week
- hourly News bulletins
- I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue

Magic.

it would be slightly different from R4
in that there'd be extra shipping forecasts, especially for South West Iceland.

*swoon*
The end of day shipping forecast, or one of the other ones? And would it include Sailing By?

*rising slowly*
(, Thu 7 Feb 2008, 16:50, closed)
well
my favourites are the "Attention all shipping!" gale warning bulletins. I'd settle for the end of day one, but I really don't like Sailing By.

Tyne, Dogger, German Bight, French Kiss, Swiss Roll. Rain at times. Good.

phwoar!
*but wonders why no Just A Minute*
(, Thu 7 Feb 2008, 16:53, closed)
Last week was good for those
"Attention all shipping. There are gale warnings in [pretty much every area, and I'm sure they even made up some new ones]."
(, Thu 7 Feb 2008, 16:54, closed)
made up areas like
north utsira, south utsira, east utsira, west utsira, north east utsira, south east utsira, north west utsira, south west utsira, north north east utsira, etc. I mean, jaysus, it's 6km square of land!

Just A Minute is on my list of bad things on Radio 4. It annoys the hell out of me. Like Jenni Murray.
(, Thu 7 Feb 2008, 16:57, closed)
And of course,
said shipping forecast would absolutely have to be read by Brian Perkins.

EDIT: Also agree with you on Just a Minute and Jenny Murray. The greasy, obsequious personality of Nicholas Parsons makes me feel nauseous...

@chcb
That's fair enough.

I have to switch off whenever Toksvig is on as I would rather set fire to myself that listen to her continuous over-excited sqwawking on the News Quiz.

"Good morning"
Jenni Murray always sounds like she's addressing a class of unruly schoolgirls.

Anyone else dislike Down The Line?

Brian Perkins
Absolutely. I have a track of him reading a spoof forecast, it's brilliant. "Rockall, sod-all."

I have a bit of an overactive imagination. Everytime I listen to the warnings I have visions of salt-encrusted, wind-blasted hoary sailors in heavy knit jumpers huddled around an oil lamp in a tiny, rain-lashed cabin in a trawler in a 30ft swell off the coast of Iceland, and when they hear the "Attention all shipping!" they freeze, drop their playing cards and peer intently at the radio to hear what might be coming.
(, Thu 7 Feb 2008, 17:02, closed)
yup
Down The Line is rubbish.

And it's one of my ambitions to have Brian PErkins read me a story. I don't care which one. I wouldn't listen to the words anyway. I would just worship at the altar of his voice.

I've always wondered
What exactly is "Channel Light Vessel Automatic"?

I have visions of a litte boat bobbling about on the Channel, flashing a light and taking slightly random automatic readings of things. "Is it 'moderate' or 'good' today? Hmmm... why not both?"
(, Thu 7 Feb 2008, 17:11, closed)
How could you miss off...
...'A Good Read'!

Top show! and how about 'Desert Island Discs' - there's your proper 'mix tape' right there.
(, Thu 7 Feb 2008, 17:12, closed)
er
what about 'The Now Show?'
(, Thu 7 Feb 2008, 17:52, closed)
Quote, Unquote.
What a shit programme that is, run by that oily nurk Rees. Random guest, but you hear it nearly every programme (if it blindsides you and you turn over when its on)- " As I said when I was talking to Larry- you know Larry, don't you? Larry Olivier. So, anyway, when we were at the Strat"-FUCK OFF.

Holy Mother of Glod
I thought that my Radio 4 habit was my own particular dirty secret (as I'm under 50).

News Quiz - Toksvig not as good as Coren, but still good.

Now Show - Top Stuff

Just a Minute - getting boring now as Freud descends into senility and Parsons drips more oil than the Exxon Valdez.

Today - despite the bias of certain presenter/s it's still good to hear Humphreys rip some scrote to pieces. Happens less and less these days, sadly.

Sorry I haven't a clue - lovely. Hope they keep Humph wired up to his cryogenic life support for a few more years.

Down the Line - Utter Crap. Whitehouse's Cockney Geezer every five minutes was bad enough in the Fast Show but is now quite frankly anal seepage.

The B3tan R4 appreciation society - who would have thunk it?
(, Fri 8 Feb 2008, 10:35, closed)
ah the shipping forecast...
the NZ one, that is:

... Bream Head to Cape Colville...
(, Fri 8 Feb 2008, 11:34, closed)
Outing myself now...
No, not that, or *that*. Or even the night I spend doing **those**.

I also like Radio 4. I've just been catching up with the In Our Time podcast (Melvyn Bragg, *rowr* (and I'm mostly a boy and not even gay)). I'm waiting intently for I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue to start again (been to the live show twice, and I have a purple kazoo!), as it's the closest thing to heaven ever. I've been known to try to finish arguments with "Mornington Crescent".

I know bog all about shipping - in fact I get seasick on blue carpet. But I love the Shipping Forecast too... I have no idea what they're on about but it sounds awesome. When I travelled for a job, I'd put it on in the car as I drove gloomily along the M5.

However, I think I'd drop the book of the week and instead substitute the marvellous ear candy that is the Today programme. Oh yes.

Amazingly, I've yet to convince Pink Goddess of this...
