I expect it's probably within the rules
but it's hardly fair, given that he specifically asked people not to.

It's like real names, isn't it. You don't go around using peoples' real names on the internet if they don't want you to, regardless of whether they let it slip or not. Just because there's a lot of twattishness going around today, there's no reason to join in.
