This is a think tank who has said they should sell expensive council houses when they become empty and build new ones.
Do you think this is a good or bad idea? Do you think it'll cause social cleansing?
I'm all for it, if you can sell one 4 bed in street A and build 2 4 beds in street B then that's a good idea. Council houses should be good quality social housing, there's no need for them to be in the most expensive streets.

I agree with you
Aso i reckon if people are serially feckless they should be moved into cheaper shared accomodation, like student halls.

All I can see negative about it is
those that say it'd push poorer people off expensive streets. Well, given that they don't own the house anyway and it'd only be implemented when they move out for whatever reason, I can't see how that's any different to the way housing usually works.

"oh no, we're not giving people who can't support themselves
free houses that are on the most expensive streets anymore! :("
Seems like a non-argument to me. Providing social housing is a good thing done by a responsible society. There is also a reponsibility to the tax payer to make sure those houses are as fiscally efficient as possible. That doesn't mean building a ghetto, but it does mean making sure we can house as many people in as many decent houses as possible.

Building a ghetto is fiscally irresponsible as well.
Means you're paying not much money for something that'll never be worth much money. Much better to make decent homes that will still be desireable in the future.

That's true and the fact that which are and aren't expensive streets changes so randomly.
You might within the lifetime of the building be able to sell that on again.
In fact it could be a great way for councils to profit from redevelopment. Build a street of cheap council houses, when there's a bit of spare cash, plant trees along the street, rename it an avenue, sell them off when they're free.

Morning chompy
Good idea, a lot of older housing costs local authorities massively for the general upkeep, also the tenant would benefit from modern housing with lower utility bills and housing designed for the 21st century.

From my point of view I find this a good idea as I pay a high mortgage for a small house.
Yet some people, who take advantage of the housing situation are given huge houses to home famillies who haven't paid a penny into the system over 3 or 4 generations , or have just entered the country.
Stop giving the idol people Palaces whilst the rest of us live in expensive shoe boxes.

ALMOs and LSVTs are the way forward for council housing
This means all of the rent a tenant pays goes to the upkeep of properties (as opposed to being in the council "pot"). Housing Associations are almost all non-profit organisations
Same rent = better house with an HA
