Evening ladies, plans for tonight?
I'm being a grumpy bastard behind a bar.
(, Sat 24 Jan 2015, 17:14, 79 replies, latest was 9 years ago)
one of my old pubs is closing, so we're off to there for the closing.

(, Sat 24 Jan 2015, 17:31, Reply)
Why closing? Shame to see them going really.

(, Sat 24 Jan 2015, 17:38, Reply)
the firm that own the building have asked for a 20% hike in rent.
The owners are about retirement age and have just decided enough is enough. Won pub of the year 3 times and is one of the best ale houses in Oxford. real loss.
(, Sat 24 Jan 2015, 17:54, Reply)
fucking property speculation is going to fuck up everything decent about everything

plus pubs

(, Sat 24 Jan 2015, 18:06, Reply)
I love pubs.
Pubs have beer and beer is great.

(, Sat 24 Jan 2015, 18:06, Reply)
Or you could say that it's creating a sustainable level
9 years ago when I moved here there were ten pubs within ten minutes walk - now there are three, and one is pretty much doomed.

We can't be nostalgic - drinking habits are changing.
(, Sat 24 Jan 2015, 18:08, Reply)
I agree, wp made broadly the same comment to me re camra. Trying desperately to keep every pub open, even though many are fucked.

(, Sat 24 Jan 2015, 18:10, Reply)
pub of the year three times running?
we're not talking about trimming off the crap

we're talking about a property market that is warping the economy and turning perfectly successful enterprises into potential sites for shitty lego townhouse developments
(, Sat 24 Jan 2015, 18:14, Reply)
I'll ignore the comment below
And say that that's shit. But awards, acclamation and appreciation don't win leases.
(, Sat 24 Jan 2015, 18:17, Reply)
... because we have a property market that rewards speculation and punishes successful enterprise
Thanks for agreeing with me.
(, Sat 24 Jan 2015, 18:18, Reply)
I deal with a few pub conversions
My old local went to a conversion.

Do you want me to keep all pubs open?

Yes.
What are you asking here - perhaps vowels would help.

Good lad
Keep it up.
(, Sat 24 Jan 2015, 18:33, Reply)
Unfortunately pubs will, the same as a lot of businesses. The days of a boozer on every corner well and truly fucked off years ago.

(, Sat 24 Jan 2015, 18:36, Reply)
in general, bad pubs should close, but in this case, it was a great pub fucked by property speculation.

(, Sat 24 Jan 2015, 18:40, Reply)
dunno why this concept is causing so much confusion, wp
I blame the decline of pub drinking
(, Sat 24 Jan 2015, 19:14, Reply)
Why is there a decline in pub drinking?

(, Sat 24 Jan 2015, 19:21, Reply)
in no particular order
cost, time, transport, cheap supermarket booze, less manual workers going the pub on way home from work, cost.
(, Sat 24 Jan 2015, 19:25, Reply)
The cheap supermarket booze thing is debatable. A bottle of cheap tramp cuder will get you hammered, sure, but there isn't anything sociable about it.

(, Sat 24 Jan 2015, 19:29, Reply)
there is a yawning chasm
between those who drink to get drunk, and those who drink to enjoy the particular drink of their choice. Either way though the drink will nearly always be cheaper in a supermarket than a pub. Here's a thought though, if there wasn't such a frankly offensive markup on soft drinks in pubs and bars maybe you'd get more punters through the doors, bringing their alchohol drinking mates with them - why does Coke cost more than lager when it has no alcohol duty on it? Some pubs have done free soft drinks for designated drivers, maybe that's a clue as to the way forward.
(, Sat 24 Jan 2015, 19:36, Reply)
Our cheapest soft drink is a soda and cordial, 50p. I think that's reasonable. Having ten or so asking for a glass of water each, free, because they're "here to watch the band", is taking the piss. Swings both ways.

(, Sat 24 Jan 2015, 19:42, Reply)
indeed
and I applaud you for that, as I've never in ages seen a pub with a soft drink under £1, even for a half.
(, Sat 24 Jan 2015, 19:59, Reply)
because people are fat, dull, shut-ins

I have no problem with their looks. Just their corporate values, and personal behaviour.

Don't know what specific pub you're referring to sorry?

(, Sat 24 Jan 2015, 18:19, Reply)
I'd rather a specific name sorry.
And pub of the year from?
(, Sat 24 Jan 2015, 18:28, Reply)
as in, the pub that's closing was oxford town pub of the year 2009
And again 2 other years, I think 11 and 13.

(, Sat 24 Jan 2015, 19:41, Reply)
Never lived in Oxford, just spent time there with mates that do. I recall going in there for a pint or 12.
Not a bad boozer.
(, Sat 24 Jan 2015, 19:45, Reply)
if you'll indulge me for a moment so that I can go into some detail about the holes in your argument ... *ahem*

"your a fat paedo, ner ner ner ner ner"
intellectual discourse, it ain't.

I've made beef rendang and garlic rice
I plan to eat that, maybe watch a film and drink a homebrew or something.
(, Sat 24 Jan 2015, 18:59, Reply)
Why not go to the pub.

(, Sat 24 Jan 2015, 19:03, Reply)
Can't watch a film in the pub.

(, Sat 24 Jan 2015, 19:21, Reply)
Homebrews generally taste rank, if it's the kit stuff.

(, Sat 24 Jan 2015, 19:05, Reply)
I disagree,
although if people just follow the instructions on a kit they're generally poor. But if you give it about twice as long as it says to ferment and you have decent temperature control they're comparable to decent mid level beers you buy.
(, Sat 24 Jan 2015, 19:21, Reply)
Is it just bottled you brew?

(, Sat 24 Jan 2015, 19:22, Reply)
I use a pressure barrel in this weather as it's cool all the time, if it's warm out I'll put it in some flip top bottles.

(, Sat 24 Jan 2015, 19:24, Reply)
just buy it from somebody who knows what they're doing, you prick
no offence like
(, Sat 24 Jan 2015, 19:25, Reply)
I know what I'm doing. It's a hobby, it sort of semi saves money, and I can make the sorts of beer I like which don't really get sold outside of beer festivals.

(, Sat 24 Jan 2015, 19:28, Reply)
of course, the number of licensed premises are practically unchanged but many pubs have closed.
