when i was at school we had ghastly gym knickers, big grey bloomers, that you put on under your little pleated gym slipone day we were being supervised on our hockey dribbling skills by the proctor, a man of indeterminate age and manky grey beard.
"I HOPE YOU'VE ALL REMEMBERED YOUR GREY P.E. KNICKERS," bellowed the teacher (who had almost more beard than the proctor). "THE PROCTOR DOESN'T WANT TO LOOK DOWN THE ROW AND SEE A LINE OF SCHOOLGIRLS' KNICKERS!"
"i bet he does," called out one of the girls in my year, and promptly earned herself a month's detention.
